Kansas City Ballet’s Second Company @Crossroads Hotel performances were held on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2019 in the lobby of the Crossroads Hotel. There were three showings: 4:30 p.m., 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. The Second Company, led by Christopher Ruud, features outstanding, classically trained dancers on the cusp of their professional careers. This intimate and informal performance was the perfect opportunity to introduce these emerging dancers. The group performed unique and cutting edge choreography including Mobile, a ballet choreographed by Tomm Ruud, Christopher’s late father, along with other works.
BARRE KC Streetcar Crawl
BARRE KC kicked off the Kansas City Ballet season with their KC Streetcar BARRE Crawl through Downtown. Each stop was themed with one of this year’s ballet performances!
The journey began by watching an open rehearsal of Carmina Burana at the Todd Bolender Center at 3 p.m. Then, parties converged at the Crossroads Hotel where a Tulips and Lobster inspired drink and a special performance by Kansas City Ballet’s Second Company did not disappoint.
From there, the group hopped on the streetcar to enjoy more drinks and bites with stops along the line including The Chesterfield for a Swan Lake-inspired spritzer, followed by Harry’s Country Club in the River Market for a Celtic cocktail, where they may or may not have departed with an Irish goodbye.
The annual BARRE KC Soiree was held at Boulevard Brewing Company this past Saturday (April 13, 2019) in the Muehlebach Suite.
More than 200 enjoyed complimentary beer, wine and appetizers, a dynamic performance by KCB’s Second Company, a silent auction, and of course dancing the night away with DJ Ashton Martin.
More than $9,000 was raised. Proceeds from this event help fund 16 Reach Out And Dance (R.O.A.D.) Scholarship Schools. R.O.A.D. combines dance with academics (along with live music) to make a fun environment for learning. This Kansas City Ballet program reaches 800 plus kids in Kansas City Public School District and Turner Unified School District. Each school receives a 12-week dance residency for all 3rd grade students.
On Saturday, Sept. 15, to kick off the upcoming season, Kansas City Ballet BARRE KC members embarked on an Oz-themed streetcar BARRE crawl through downtown Kansas City. The journey started by watching a rehearsal of The Wizard of Oz at the Todd Bolender Center for Dance & Creativity and ended at the “Emerald City”, disguised as Our Daily Nada, a new boozy bookstore in the historic River Market.
The streetcar also made stops at Tom’s Town Distillery and the The Chesterfield Bar at Alamo Drafthouse, with their own Oz-themed beverages (Glinda’s Gimlets and Ruby Slippers) and a chance to win Kansas City Ballet tickets or a BARRE KC membership for the 2018-19 season.
