The Academy

Registration for the 2013-2014 school year will open June 1 and will be accepted on a first-come, first serve basis until classes fill to capacity. Check back soon for updated schedules.

Lower School (Ages 3 to 11)
Enroll your aspiring dancer in Kansas City Ballet's fun and education Lower School classes for children ages 3 to 11. Classes introduce children to dance, ballet and movement while focusing on creativity and group interaction. All classes are taught by KCBS' acclaimed faculty in our state-of-the-art studios to live piano accompaniment. All Bolender Center and Johnson County classes are subject to change. KCBS reserves the right to cancel or change classes based on enrollment.

Creative Movement - Ages 3 to 5
Creative Movement is specially designed for the preschool student. This course explores both the creative and physical dimensions of each child as they gain awareness of music, rhythm, and movement. Class work is designed to develop strength, coordination, creative thinking, and expression. Through classroom activities, children refine motor skills and develop the creative process through the use of imagery and props. Students will dance barefoot to have better control of movement and body awareness. Classes meet once a week for 45 minutes.

DRESS CODE
Girls: Pale pink short sleeve leotard without embellishments or attached skirt, pale pink footless tights. No ballet shoes. Hair should be pulled back neatly. No jewelry please.
Boys: Black pants/shorts, white t-shirt. No ballet shoes.

Fundamentals - Ages 5 to 6
The fundamentals class expands on the elements and practices of Creative Movement. Quality of movement, intricacy of patterns and expectations are elevated for the maturing child. Fundamentals will introduce the child to the structure of a dance class, transitioning them towards Pre-Ballet. While dance elements are further developed, imagery, musicality, creative thinking, spatial awareness and team work continue to be emphasized. Classes meet once a week for 45 minutes.

Pre-Ballet - Ages 6 to 7
As students graduate from Fundamentals, new exciting opportunities and standards await them. Pre-Ballet is designed to fully transition the student from creative dance forms to a classical ballet class. Ballet terminology, class structure, introductory steps and barre work will be introduced in this course. Pre-Ballet emphasizes creative expression through movement to music. All students are required to bring a 3 ring binder notebook to class to notate ballet terminology and practice exercises for homework. Ballet shoes are required for this level. They should be snuggly fit with little room to grow. The instructor will approve the fit of the shoes on the first day of class. Classes meet once a week for 45 minutes.

Girls: Pale pink short sleeve leotard without embellishments or attached skirt, pale pink convertible tights, pink ballet slippers, hair done neatly in a bun. A small ribbon around the bun is allowed. No jewelry please. Ballet notebook.
Boys: Black pants/shorts, white t-shirt, black ballet shoes with black socks or white ballet shoes with white socks. Ballet notebook.

Level 1 - Ages 7 to 8
Level 1 is the first level of academic ballet training in Kansas City Ballet School. Upon entering this level students are expected to have a respect for the classroom and learning process. Dancers will be introduced to elementary ballet steps both at the barre and center.  Stretching, coordination, strength building and musicality will be major components in the students dance education. All students are required to bring a 3 ring binder notebook to class to notate ballet terminology and practice exercises for homework. Students are responsible for information presented in class in addition to practicing independently outside of the classroom. Level 1 student’s also become eligible to audition for Kansas City Ballet’s The Nutcracker.  Acceptance and casting for the production is at the sole discretion of the Artistic Staff of the Kansas City Ballet’s professional company. This class meets once a week for 60 minutes.

Girls: Light blue short sleeved leotard, pale pink convertible tights, pink ballet shoes, hair done neatly in a bun. A small ribbon around the bun is allowed. No jewelry please. Ballet notebook.
Boys: Black pants/shorts, white t-shirt, black ballet shoes with black socks or white ballet shoes with white socks. Ballet notebook.

Level 2 - Ages 8 to 9
Elevated expectations meet your child as they enter Level 2. Steps previously introduced will evolve and incorporate different positions, patterning and coordination. Level 2 students are eligible to participate in the School Performance at the end of the school year. Children will learn a choreographed dance set to music and perform the completed work on stage. All students are required to bring a 3 ring binder notebook to class to notate ballet terminology and practice exercises for homework. Level 2 students are eligible to audition for Kansas City Ballet’s The Nutcracker. Acceptance and casting for the production is at the sole discretion of the Artistic Staff of the Kansas City Ballet’s professional company. Classes for this level meet twice weekly.

DRESS CODE
Girls: Red tank leotard, pale pink convertible tights, pink ballet shoes, hair done neatly in a bun. A small ribbon around the bun is allowed. No jewelry please. Ballet notebook.
Boys: Black pants/shorts, white t-shirt, black ballet shoes with black socks or white ballet shoes with white socks. Ballet notebook.

Level 3 - Ages 9 to 11
Level 3 is the final stage in our Lower School. The large amount of material and vocabulary explored in this level, with increased expectations, requires more than one year of study. As a result, students should expect to remain in Level 3 for two consecutive years at minimum. Girls will begin to study pre-pointe work which is a practice designed to prepare them for pointe shoes in Level 4. All students will need a green Thera-Band for foot and ankle strengthening. All students are required to bring a 3 ring binder notebook to class to notate ballet terminology and practice exercises for homework. Level 3 students are eligible to participate in the School Performance at the end of the school year. Level 3 students are eligible to audition for Kansas City Ballet’s The Nutcracker. Acceptance and casting for the production is at the sole discretion of the Artistic Staff of the Kansas City Ballet’s professional company. Classes for this level meet three times weekly.

DRESS CODE
Girls: Royal blue tank leotard, pale pink convertible tights, pink ballet shoes, hair done neatly in a bun. A small ribbon around the bun is allowed. No jewelry please. Ballet notebook. Green Thera-Band.
Boys: Black pants/shorts, white t-shirt, black ballet shoes with black socks or white ballet shoes with white socks. Ballet notebook. Green Thera-Band.

Boys Classes
Boys Class (Level 1-3) is designed to prepare young men in some of the nuances of the male dancer. They are coached in the elaborate style (bravura) required of the male dancer.
