Kansas City Ballet’s Reach Out And Dance (ROAD) program is finishing up the 2004-05 school year with a bang! More than 400 third and fourth graders in participating elementary schools are showcasing what they have learned and accomplished at their year-end ROAD Rallies. ROAD Rallies are happening the week of May 9th – 13th at Broken Arrow and Bluejacket-Flint Elementary Schools in Shawnee, as well as Primitivo Garcia and Gladstone Academy Schools in Kansas City, Missouri. Friends and family are invited to see the students perform. ROAD, KCB’s in-school residency, is taught by professional dancers and accompanied by professional pianists. This weekly dance class (not ballet) takes place in schools for third or fourth grade students. KCB’s goal is to bring dance directly into elementary schools to introduce children to the fundamentals of dance: energy, precision, discipline, and teamwork. Through dance the students can learn valuable life lessons, that tenacity, joyful concentration, and hard work can equal success. The music and the movement activities in the class are planned to enhance the school curriculum in other subject areas. A full year of ROAD consists of 24 weekly classes, culminating in an end of the year ROAD Rally to showcase what the children have accomplished. Bob Wilcox, Principal at Primitivo Garcia School said, “I am pleased with a program like this that helps to motivate students. We have even seen a turnabout in the behaviors with some of our students as they have redirected and focused their energies through dance.” Interested in
