2005 Winter Performance
Four Giants in Dance, Four Days Only!

Four giants in dance will be showcased for the Winter Program of Kansas City Ballet February 24 through 27 at the Lyric Theatre: the Kansas City premiere of Twyla Tharp’s As Times Goes By, Jerome Robbins’ Afternoon of a Faun, George Balanchine’s Concerto Barocco and Kansas City Ballet’s Artistic Director Emeritus Todd Bolender’s Danse Concertante.

As Time Goes By is the second of three works by Twyla Tharp being produced by Kansas City Ballet. Set to the music of Franz Josef Haydn, this Kansas City premiere is especially meaningful to Artistic Director William Whitener, who danced in the original cast.

"As Time Goes By changed the way that dancers and audiences perceived ballet as a contemporary art form,” said Whitener. “At its premiere, the audience was fascinated by its pure invention, complexity, wit and serenity.”

The Winter Program celebrates the return of Jerome Robbins’ ballet, Afternoon of a Faun featuring the music of Claude Debussy, Prelude a L’Apres-midi d’un Faune. A huge success following its Kansas City Ballet premiere, this work is set in a contemporary sunlit ballet studio with two lone dancers.

Concerto Barocco, one of the most renowned of George Balanchine’s ballets and is set in three movements to Concerto for Two Violins in D Minor by Johann Sebastian Bach. Considered to be one of his most loved works, it is a visual sculpture akin to the ornamentations of Baroque architecture.

Todd Bolender’s Danse Concertante, set to the music of Igor Stravinsky and featuring scenery by the late Kansas City light sculptor Dale Eldred, will conclude the Winter Program. This ballet is pure crisp dance in the neo-classical style that opens and closes with a march. In between, it presents six variations of contrasting character, infused with zest and humor. This is a ballet that epitomizes the personal charm and humor for which Mr. Bolender is rightly celebrated.

The Winter Performance will be February 24 through 27 at the Lyric Theatre (1029 Central) in downtown Kansas City, Missouri. Performance days and times are Thursday at 7:30 p.m., Friday at 8 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Saturday matinee tickets are available for only $10 in the orchestra level!
