KCB School Introduces New & Expanded Curriculum

Pilates class at Kansas City Ballet School.

Kansas City Ballet School classes start September 6, 2005, and will run until May 25, 2006. Kansas City Ballet School offers two tracks of study; one for the career-minded student who aspires to be a professional dancer; the other is for children and adults who wish to study for recreational reasons and want the best training available. All classes are taught by highly-qualified professionals with the experience and dedication to guide, inspire and nurture all students to be their best, regardless of their goals in dance.

New this year is a special expanded open division available for both teenagers and adults that want to take ballet, jazz, pilates and yoga as a form of exercise and to stay in shape. The fall open division will accommodate a wide range of levels including beginning ballet and jazz, intermediate/advanced ballet and jazz. In addition, introduction to pilates and yoga will be offered for the first time. All classes can be taken with a class card with the exception of yoga, which will be offered as a semester course.

"The new open division is perfect for those students and adults that want to study dance, but not pursue it with the intensity of the pre-professional division," said Ms. Taylor. "Pilates and yoga are excellent forms of body conditioning that are very compatible with dance. This exciting program addition is in preparation for the new Bolender Center."

In the pre-professional division, classes are offered in ballet, pointe, men's technique, jazz, modern and body conditioning. Beginning this fall, they will also be offering classes in flamenco, featuring Tamara Carson as the flamenco instructor.

2005 School Performance

School Director Tenley Taylor said, "From time to time we introduce new forms of dance for the enhancement of ballet technique and in order to create more expressive and well rounded dancers. Flamenco will emphasize the carriage and drama of the upper body and arms. It will develop musicality through the use of rhythm and heel-work as well as develop an appreciation of the culture that created it."
