For years, Kansas City Ballet has produced some of the most original and exciting performances in the country. From classical to contemporary pieces, Kansas City Ballet continues to perform works rarely seen in the United States. The 2005-2006 season will be no exception. Artistic Director William Whitener spoke of the upcoming season. “Our challenge as we go about the process of developing a season such as this, is to offer a wide selection of work that will both appeal to an ever increasing segment of our dance public, invite new attendees to enjoy dance in a way they have perhaps not envisioned, and provide artistic challenges to our dancers.” The Fall Repertory Program (October 6-9, 2005), features the company premiere of Stravinsky Violin Concerto choreographed by George Balanchine. The program continues with another company premiere by local choreographer Paula Weber. Her Toccata e due canzoni is choreographed to the music of Bohuslav Martinu. The program ends with an audience favorite, Margo Sappington’s ZuZu Lounge, which is choreographed to the retro lounge music of Juan Esquivel. Last seen on the Kansas City stage in spring 2002, this work proved to be one of the most popular and memorable pieces of that season. Other season highlights include company premieres of La Fille mal gardèe (The Poorly Guarded Daughter) and Mr. Whitener’s Beat in winter 2006. A second series of Six Solos of Consequence will premiere in spring 2006 and feature choreography by Isadora Duncan, Mary Wigman, Claire Porter, Bob Fosse, and two works by George Balanchine. Todd Bolender’s Voyager will return after a 10-year absence, and finishing the season will be Kansas City Ballet’s third work by Twyla Tharp, The Catherine Wheel Suite, with music by pop/rock icon David Byrne (The Talking Heads). A holiday favorite, The Nutcracker, will also run December 3-24, 2005. Don’t miss this incredible season!
